Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills), Sorrento, Italy

Located in a deep crevasse created by a prehistoric earthquake, the buildings of the Valley of the Mills are actually quite modern—as least as far as Italian ruins go. While the mills themselves were built from stone as far back as the 13th century, the site was not abandoned until 1866 (due to the construction of Piazza Tasso up above the gorge). The stone buildings quickly became overgrown with vegetation that thrived in the humid crevasse, making the valley appear as if it has been unused for centuries.

The Maunsell Sea Forts, England

Although they look like props from an H.G. Wells film adaptation, these giant metal towers in the Thames estuary were actually constructed to protect England from German air raids during WWII. The forts were decommissioned in the 1950s, and the abandoned towers were used by pirate radio operators in the following decades. Today, one of the forts is managed by micronation Principality of Sealand; the rest can be seen safely from a boat or, on a clear day, the shores of Shoebury East Beach.

Pripyat was established on Feb. 4th, 1970 in Ukraine near the border of Belarus as a Soviet nuclear city. It was home to many of the workers who worked in the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which melted down disastrously in the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster.

Michigan Central Station in Detroit, U.S.A.

Michigan Central Station was built in 1913 in Detroit to create a new public transportation hub. Several planning oversights and mistakes, however, led to its gradual decline and closing in 1988. The building’s fate is still being decided, but in the mean time, the station has appeared in several films and videos, including Eminem’s “8 Mile” film and “Beautiful” music video.
